Despite this, the idea that mathematics cannot be shared remains firmly entrenched, a perceived failing that has even been branded a lack of culture by vocal forces in the media as well as cultural and political establishment. Cdric Villani's popular success proves once again that a common awareness has developed, albeit in a very confused way, of the major role of mathematics in the construction and efficiency of natural sciences, which are at the origin of our technologies. Jean Dhombres, mathematician and science historian, and Gerhard Heinzmann, philosopher of science and also a specialist in mathematics engage in a fruitful dialogue with the two mathematicians, prompting readers to reflect on mathematical activity and its social consequences in history as well as in the modern world. This book challenges the views put forward by Pierre Cartier, one of the anchors of the famous Bourbaki group, and Cdric Villani, one of the most brilliant mathematicians of his generation, who received the Fields Medal in 2010.

Also, Locke & Key is huge at Comic-Con every year, so I have been wondering what I have been missing. So, it was only natural that I would check out his graphic novel series. How I Got Here: I have read Hill’s two novels– Heart-Shaped Box and Horns- and would consider myself a fan of his work, eager to observe and support him as he develops as an author. Highly recommended for readers of fantasy and horror as this series is highly imaginative and promises to be an awesome ongoing plot. This series is addicting and showcases what Hill is best at–characterization, and the mystery and magic within the plot forces the reader to imagine all the possibilities of Keyhouse. Check out my rubric for my detailed assessment. Quick Review: Earns an 92 %, or 4.6 stars out of 5. Recommended For: lovers of horror and fantasy anyone who enjoys graphic novels. She has awoken into a darkness she does not understand, scarred from a terrible battle, only to find that life at Biltmore Estate has changed in unimaginable ways. Same thing with Circe: why is she turning men into pigs? She’s so often portrayed as villainous, but once she and Odysseus come to an understanding, she ends up being one of the most helpful deities he encounters. Why is this man so important to Achilles? Homer shows us the end of their story, and I wanted to know the beginning. We hear that Patroclus is ‘the most beloved companion’ of Achilles, but we don’t hear much more than that, even though Achilles’s reaction to his death is the crux of the entire Iliad. “I found both of these characters very mysterious in the original mythology. “I was really interested in those untold stories,” Miller says, sipping tea in the airy living room of her home just outside Philadelphia. In each book, Miller narrates a familiar tale in the voice of someone seen only from the outside in the originals: in the first, Achilles’s lover Patroclus, a minor character in the Iliad, and in her latest, Circe, the witch who turns men into pigs in the Odyssey. Madeline Miller’s new novel, Circe, to be published by Little, Brown in April, takes the same stimulating approach to ancient Greek literature as its bestselling 2012 predecessor, The Song of Achilles. The first half of the narrative focuses on the magic Margarita experiences visiting Cuba and learning about the language and landscape of the island. Enchanted Air: Two Cultures, Two Wings is composed of what Engle refers to in her author's note as "travel memories" from the first fourteen years of her life (191). The novel's dust jacket begins: "Margarita is a girl from two worlds." The young protagonist describes her life from 1951 through 1965 growing up in Los Angeles and frequently visiting her mother's homeland of Cuba. The Plot: Engle's work follows other recent examples of memoirs in verse such as Jacqueline Woodson's Brown Girl Dreaming and Thanhha Lai's Inside Out and Back Again in that it explores the author's childhood experiences of "otherness" during tumultuous periods in US history. Enchanted Air was also a finalist for the YALSA Award for Excellence in Nonfiction for Young Adults ages 12 to 18. According to the ALA's website, the Pura Belpré award is presented annually to a Latino/Latina writer and illustrator whose work best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth. Margarita Engle's 2015 Enchanted Air was named the winner of the Pura Belpré author award. Last Monday the American Library Association announced the 2016 youth media award winners. RT Book Reviews The launch book sets up this dangerous universe and fills it with amazing characters who are sure to grab reader's hearts and minds. There is plenty of action, thrills and some humor in her new series, The Asarlaí Wars, as these mercenaries become reluctant sort-of heroes in the face of treachery and fanaticism. "Andreas has already been making a name for herself with her terrific fantasy series The Lost Ancients, but now she kicks off a fast-paced and high-energy SF series featuring a band of mercenaries led by Starship Captain Vaslisha Tor Dain. Vaslisha Tor Dain is a mercenary starship captain with a few simple rules: A good ship is better than a great man, in case of confusion always err on the side of blowing someone’s head off, and never fall for a telepath or a member of her crew. When not saving the general populace from coffee shop shenanigans, Marie likes to visit the UK and keeps hoping someone will give her a nice summer home in the Forest of Dean. She lives in Southern California and is currently owned by two very faery-minded cats. So really, writing is a way of saving the masses. If she wasn’t writing about all of the people in her head, she’d be lurking about coffee shops annoying innocent passer-by with her stories. Marie is a fantasy and science fiction reader with a serious writing addiction. This also ties into the title and the fact that The Changeover is-in my humble opine-a story of “layers.” On the surface it’s a tale of a girl and a magic-imbued quest to save her younger brother from an evil spirit/demon. In particular I’d like to shine the spotlight a little more closely on my observation that: “The author has focused on universal themes of family, friendship, and “the ties that bind”…” However, since penning my Supernatural Underground thoughts I have found myself reflecting further on the story. It is now regarded as a classic of supernatural Kids/YA fantasy.” It is also currently being made into a film and Hachette have rereleased the title - huzza for re-releases! □ You can read the post in full by clicking on: Book of Magic - The Changeover by Margaret Mahy.Īs I wrote then: “First published in 1984, Margaret Mahy’s The Changeover won the Carnegie Medal (for Children’s and YA fiction) in the same year.
